i was recently showing my students some pictures of students in their penpal class in america. several of the american students had braces, and this was bewildering to my students.
what is that on their teeth?
are their teeth rotten?
how do they eat?
is it like nail polish?
and really, explaining braces and explaining why so many american children wear braces to children in ghana IN SIGN LANGUAGE is very difficult.
Perfect teeth. Something we can all have at the cost of usually 50% insurance and 50% out of pocket hard work. Here in America, anyway, for now. Perfection.... I know a woman with a gap in her front teeth. I love that gap and she is beautiful. I wonder what imperfection makes you or me perfect in someone else's eyes.
Their indigenous diets with lack of complete infestation with "western" food is keeping their teeth beautiful and their smiles wide!!! What beautiful faces!!! How wonderful that they dont' understand braces or the need for them!!! Encourage indigenous African diets as much as you can with them! it's the only thing that will make sure their generations have room for all of those beautiful, flawless teeth!
I am a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Ghana from June 2009 to August 2011. I work at a deaf school, teaching art to Primary, Junior High, and Vocational students.
